Although it’s difficult to exactly replicate salon quality results at home, if clients were able to learn hands-on from stylists and makeup artists they could make the most of their hair and makeup everyday. Holding classes helps you expand your business, and it’s also a great marketing tool. If clients are able to make their hair look almost salon quality every day, people will ask where they go to get their hair done.
Organising the Classes
You have two choices when it comes to organising classes. You can ask clients what they’d like to learn, or you can just set up a couple of basic classes and expand if they become popular. You should plan to have the classes either at night, after working hours, or during the weekend.
The two basics would be how to achieve a good blow out and hair styling, followed up with a basic makeup lesson. You can choose to have each class priced separately, or create a package deal for all three classes. Make sure you charge enough to cover any beauty supplies you need to provide and to pay the stylist who will teach the class. If the classes become popular, you can start expanding and creating classes for certain techniques. For example, instead of a basic makeup class you can have one specifically on eye shadow techniques or a class on how to use certain salon supplies like flat irons and blow dryer attachments.
Marketing the Classes
The easiest way to market is to put up a sign that advertises the classes. Make sure you list the types of classes, a short description, and the class fee. This allows you to open your first few classes up to current clients. In order to insure that everyone gets help and attention, keep class sizes to six people or less.
If the classes seem successful with your current clients, start advertising online through your salon’s website. You can also market through fliers, and of course word of mouth is one of the best ways to advertise. If your current clients love the classes, most likely they’ll tell friends and family. If the classes are struggling, but it’s a vision that you have and want it to be successful, start promoting it through written advertisements in the paper or a local community magazine. Before long, you should have a whole new section of your business exploding.
